Recently I fell passionate for the game of chess, so I decided to create this chess set made of screws, metal elements and steel board. I love manual work, so I absolutely enjoyed the creation process, although I had a few disasters along the way ;)
To make the board, I bought a rusty steel sheet and then I polished it with a power drill using a disc with sand paper on top. I left circular artefacts on purpose - I love the pattern. Then I cut squares out of a sticky tape and placed them on the board to cover the future "black" fields. The rest I sprayed with a few layers of transparent car polish. Then I removed the tape and poured hydrogen peroxide + salt on these fields, left for a day until the beautiful rust appeared. Then I poured the resin all over to stop the rust from spreading and developing further. Design of the figures wasn't complicated, except the kings and knights. I used clock gears which I collect - cutting and mounting them wasn't easy! The black figures I sprayed with a black polish and then I sanded and polished all the edges by hand, to achieve the aged look. The black pawns I first bathed for a day in a mixture of hydrogen peroxide and acetone, to break the top stainless coating from the screws, then I heated them heavily with a gas torch until they turned dark. The figures have magnetic holders which allowed me to hang the chess board on my wall and it's even possible to play in this vertical way.
